Position Title: Product Design Electronics Engineer



Firecomms ( is a high-tech optoelectronics Company with management, product design, product verification and sales functions located in Ireland and manufacturing in China;  sales are made worldwide. Firecomms offers a range of optical transceivers, fibre and components for use in industrial, medical and consumer/utility applications. Our products include both standard transceiver modules as well as specialized/custom designed solutions developed in close collaboration with our customers. Firecomms’ capability includes the design and manufacture of light emitting devices, mixed- signal analog ICs as well as the optical and mechanical design of housings and packages.

Firecomms is looking for a Senior Design Engineer to join the team in Cork, Ireland on a permanent basis.
The successful candidate will design, develop and characterise next generation optoelectronic modules for systems used in consumer, industrial and medical applications worldwide.


Key Responsibilities

The Design Engineer will be expected to:

  • Undertake product design, develop prototypes, specifications and test methodologies to evaluate new product designs.
  • Perform calculations and analyses to verify designs. Document engineering reports.
  • Collaborate with other engineers on the team such as mechanical and IC design engineers to ensure designs meet requirements and timelines.
  • Ensure that designs meet and exceed product specifications, regulatory requirements and international standards.
  • Take ownership of customer technical issues and co-ordinate that the necessary internal resources required to resolve the issue and ensure they are acted on in a timely manner.
  • When necessary support out-of-hours technical support to customers located worldwide.
  • Design, build, and test communication systems to demonstrate or measure performance parameters.
  • Document and present designs, document results of experiments and testing, propose ideas, design concepts, and experiments to team.
  • Responsible for hands-on work in the lab, set up lab equipment, develop and set up customized lab equipment as required for testing designs and new assemblies.
  • Able to conceptualize and develop novel ideas and designs.
  • Ideal candidate is an innovator, is self-initiated, highly motivated, enjoys hands-on work and is an independent thinker.
  • Contribute to the generation of patents.
  • Troubleshoots designs, devices, processes, and system challenges as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Candidate should have the following education, experience and skills:


Education: BE or BSc in Electronics, Mechatronics Engineering or a related discipline.



  • Minimum five years of industry relevant experience.
  • More than two years of experience in product and/or process design and development.
  • Solid understanding of the physical layer behaviour of high speed data buses, such as Gigabit Ethernet.
  • Significant hands-on test, measure and debug skills.
  • Excellent communication and technical writing skills.


Desired Skills: Preference will be given to candidates with as many as possible of the below capabilities.


  • Experience of Project Management of product development from concept to initial production and to subsequently provide support for applications engineering and sales activities.
  • Knowledge of the Ethernet and Industrial Ethernet standard including the physical layer and software layers.
  • Knowledge of optoelectronics and fibre optics.
  • Experienced in design and development of optical systems/optoelectronic assemblies and prior experience working with a range of detectors and light sources such as PDs, LEDs, laser diodes and related assemblies.
  • Knowledge of high speed PCB layout and ability to perform layout and design in a known PCB/CAD package.
  • Programming familiarity, C/C++, Python, LabVIEW etc.
  • Familiarity with mechanical design CAD packages.
  • EMI/ESD mitigation and testing.
  • SMT manufacturing.
  • Master’s Degree in Electronics Engineering preferred although candidates with a Mechatronics or similar multi-disciplinary degree strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Independent worker, eager learner, general attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to confidently present complex technical issues to teams members, vendors and customers.
  • Position requires strong analytical and data interpretation skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, projects and team members.


Reporting: The Design Engineer will report directly to the Chief Technology Officer of Firecomms Ireland.
