Position Title: Mechanical/Mechatronics Design Engineer
Background
Firecomms is looking for a Mechanical/Mechatronics Design Engineer to join the team in Cork, Ireland on a permanent basis. The successful candidate will assist in the design, development and characterisation of next generation optoelectronic modules for systems used in consumer, industrial and medical applications worldwide.
Firecomms (www.firecomms.com) is a high-tech optoelectronics company with product design, product verification and sales functions located in Ireland and manufacturing in China; sales are made worldwide. Firecomms offers a range of optical transceivers, fiber and components for use in industrial, medical and consumer/utility applications. Firecomms products include both standard transceiver modules as well as specialized/custom designed solutions developed in close collaboration with our customers. The Company’s capability includes the design and manufacture of light emitting devices (LEDs), mixed-signal analog ICs and mechanical design of packages, housings and connectors.

The Mechanical/Mechatronics Design Engineer will:
- Contribute to the mechanical design of the Company’s new product developments, collaborating closely with senior mechanical and electrical engineers from design conception to volume production.
- Simulation and modelling of thermal and mechanical properties of design concepts
- Development and evaluation of product prototypes
- Undertake the mechanical design of characterisation electro-mechanical test fixtures and production tooling
- Documentation of engineering drawings and process in Firecomms database.
- Assist in the transfer of processes and procedures to Firecomms manufacturing facility in China
- Undertake qualification and evaluation of vendors and vendor products
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conception of new products based on customer and marketing requirements.
- Carry out product design as part of a multi-functional team.
- Responsible for the production of CAD models & component drawings to production departments and the release of such to the Firecomms database.
- Modelling, or liaison with people undertaking thermal and mechanical modelling of such sub-assemblies to predict behaviour in operation and under various thermal stresses.
- Analysis of designs using DFMEA, FEA and Tolerance Analysis tools.
- Assist in the testing of the components in conjunction with test lab personnel.
- Organising the environmental testing of such sub-assemblies and analysing the results.
- Identifying suitable sub-contractors, obtaining quotations for tooling and for production, and selecting or recommending sub-contractors.
- Support and contribute to the generation of budgets and business plans
- Inspecting or supervising the inspection of product received from sub-contractors.
- The Mechanical/Mechatronic Engineer will be expected to contribute to the development of a structured and repeatable design process and to the quality systems required to ensure product quality.
- Contribute to peer reviews of work done by other engineers in the company.
On occasions, the Engineer will be expected to work with customers, to resolve particular problems, develop specifications for new products or become familiar with customer needs. Occasional travel will be required, for example to customers, suppliers and EU project meetings.
The position requires that the candidate must be located or willing to re-locate to Cork.

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS
- Hold a Hons Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering or similar engineering discipline.
- Candidates with a Mechatronics or similar multi-disciplinary degree are strongly encouraged to apply
- Fully proficient in all aspects of CAD systems (Inventor, Solidworks), DFMEA, FEA procedures.
- Thorough knowledge of engineering materials.
- Candidates should show flexibility and the ability to work with a team.

Position Title: Senior Analog Design Engineer
Background
Firecomms is looking for a Senior Analog Design Engineer to join the IC team on a permanent basis. The successful candidate will work on the design of ICs for next generation optoelectronic modules for systems used in renewable energy, consumer, industrial and medical applications worldwide.

Firecomms offers a range of optical transceivers, fiber and components for use in industrial, medical and consumer/utility applications. Our products include both standard transceiver modules as well as specialized/custom designed solutions developed in close collaboration with our customers. Firecomms’ capability includes the design and manufacture of light emitting devices, mixed-signal analog ICs as well as the optical and mechanical design of housings and packages.

Key Responsibilities
The Design Engineer will be expected to:
- Design receiver ICs for optoelectronic applications.
- Design LED and laser driver ICs.
- Carry out layout of critical analog block and supervision of IC Layout engineers.
- Work with external IC design teams in validating and testing their IC designs.
- Contribute to IC characterisation, test and qualification engineering activities.
- Work closely with production engineering teams to successfully release products to manufacturing.
- Other duties as assigned.
Candidate should have the following education, experience and skills:
Education: Bachelor’s degree or higher in electrical engineering, telecommunications engineering, or a related field.
Experience:
- 5+ years of analog IC design experience.
- Understanding of the fabrication process and its impact on circuit behaviour.
- Ability to create innovative and novel circuits.
- Excellent command / highly proficient in spoken and written English.
Desired Skills: Preference will be given to candidates with experience in as many as possible of the following:
- Industry standard design tools (Cadence Virtuoso, Mentor Graphics etc.).
- Design of high-speed analog circuits, such as TIAs, limiting amplifiers, comparators, drivers.
- Low noise and low distortion circuit design techniques.
- Photodiodes, LEDs, RCLEDs.
- Interface circuit design,50 ohm I/O circuits, LVDS, PECL, CML etc.
- Experience with foundry processes such as TSMC, UMC, XFAB.
- Established track record of delivering completed designs into production.
- Experience in working with test teams debugging prototype IC’s.
- Programming in any of C, C++, Verilog, Verilog-A, Verilog-AMS, Python, Visual Basic.
Reporting: The Senior Analog Design Engineer will report to the IC Design Manager of Firecomms Ireland.
